Domestic Actions

DOMESTIC ACTIONS TEAM
By organizing weekly demonstrations and creative actions across Canada in the lead up to Copenhagen, we will gain media coverage, raise community awareness, and show our fierce support for climate leadership at Copenhagen. Domestic actions will also be organized during the Conference in response to Canada’s predicted inaction and unwillingness to cooperate at the negotiations.
Our actions:
-Climate Crew Mondays – take action in your community!
-Give Harper A Wake Up Call – by phone!
-Adopt Your MP
-KyotoPlus – join the movement over 100,000 strong in Canada!
It’s Time To Listen – Climate Crew Mondays
We need to make climate leadership at the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen and action on green jobs the #1 issue for Canadians! We are going to keep doing quick actions on our campuses and in our communities every Monday leading up to the international climate summit in Copenhagen this December to raise mass awareness and tell our government that we want climate leadership. We are looking for Climate Crews who will quickly gather in a public space (from MP’s offices to campuses) to do a fast action, and then disperse after calling MPs. If you can’t join a Climate Crew then you can join our Phone Crew and make a difference wherever you are.
Our goal is to get our government take strong climate action at home, and lead efforts to create a strong and just global climate deal. We will vary the theme every week to keep things fresh, spread the word, and keep growing the Climtae Crews and Phone Crews from week to week.
Let’s keep bringing out more friends, putting together better visuals, doing more fun actions and calling our MPs. Imagine the impact we will have when we show our government that we are not going anywhere and there are more and more of us each week. They’ll know we’re serious, and we’ll have fun doing it.

Give our Politicians A Wake Up Call – by phone!
Every Monday, the Climate Crews are mobilizing hundreds of Canadians to call Harper, Ignatieff, Prentice along with other MPs to tell our government that climate leadership at the UN Climate Summit at Copenhagen, environmental justice, investment in clean energy and action on green jobs are the most important issues to us. They need to know that we’re not going away and our numbers are growing.
Join our Climate Crews at domesticactions@ourclimate.ca to learn about weekly themes and scripts for the Wake Up Calls. Then phone our politicians by calling 1 (866) 599-4999 & asking for them. For info at www.facebook.com/listenecouter.
Adopt Your MP
Make a new friend: Your MP’s job is to represent YOU. Contact your MP to establish a relationship with him or her. MPs are normally very receptive and will respond quickly to e-mails, phone calls, or requests for meetings. Don’t be shy – they may be a politician but they’re also members of your community!
“It’s a date!”: Now that you have made that initial contact – the BEST way to make an impact is to set up a meeting with your MP. Give him or her (another) call or e-mail, and request a short meeting as soon as you can. Tell him or her you would like to discuss Canada’s climate policy, or lack thereof . Be friendly, polite, concerned, and well-informed. Get some information from this site
.
Give ‘em a call: To make initial contact, to keep in constant contact, or to follow-up on a meeting, pick up the phone and give your MP a call. Tell them what you think, and what actions you expect of them, the House of Commons, their party, etc. Try to insist that you speak with your MP and not their voicemail (voicemail is great too though).
Fire off a message: Send your MP a quick and personalized e-mail to remind them that you and your fellow constituents care about Canada’s actions vis-à-vis the climate.
Get others on board: We call it “Adopt-a-riding” – Get other constituents in your riding to contact you MP as well. Your voice will be amplified, and you may meet some very interesting people in your community that you can work with!
KyotoPlus – join the movement over 100,000 strong in Canada!
KyotoPlus is a growing coalition of citizens, organizations, and politicians who are in favour of strong governmental action on climate change. We need youth’s support to get hundreds of thousands more people and more MPs to sign on to their petition. With 148 MPs signed on, we only need 7 more to sign on to get the majority of the House of Commons in support of the Politician’s pledge. Join this group to encourage MPs in your area who haven’t signed KyotoPlus to follow the call for action and sign! Learn more about the campaign at www.kyotoplus.ca.
WE ONLY NEED 7 MORE MPs to have a majority in the House of Commons!
Contact the MPs listed here and tell them to sign onto KyotoPlus!
