COP15 Starts
So today the official negotiations started talking place. Countries made statements, positions were clarified. And of course, youth were out in force with our awesome action happening right after plenary started. We staged a Beatles inspired bed-in to “Give Youth a Chance.”
Members of the CYD also had their first meeting with Michael Martin, the head negotiator for the Canadian Delegation. As expected, Canada is going to not be going out of its way to contribute meanifully in the negotiations. As you can read in several of the blogs posted today, the exzact opposite may be the case.
As COP ramps up over the next couple days I urge each of you to do everything you can to demostrate the public support at home for meaningful action. Call your MP, talk to everyone you know, join in the many actions that are happening around the country. We can win this, if we stand together

Youth Stage “bed-in” outside of UN plenary session - Devon Willis
To mark the 29th anniversary of John Lennon’s death tomorrow, a group of international youth staged a ‘bed-in’ today in the main hallways of the conference centre, outside the plenary session where the negotiations were ongoing.
Day 1: Meeting with the “Official” Canadian Delegation
- by Graham Anderson
This morning we had the privilege of joining the Canadian Delegation NGO briefing before the welcoming ceremony. Michael Martin, Canada’s lead negotiator, shared his views on the prospects for the conference and what to expect from the Canadian Delegation specifically.
While Martin was positive that a “successful outcome” would likely result from the conference, it became clear that the Canadian Delegation’s definition of success is not one that prevents the worst effects of climate change or reduces the risk of runaway climate change.READ MORE….
Climate Change is Cultural Genocide - by Janice Grey
By no means am I an expert on climate science -however, the implications of climate change on people and cultures is something I am pretty comfortable talking about. Considering my people are among the most heavily affected groups, I kind of feel it’s my duty to speak out, to voice the concerns of the unheard, marginalized and colonized READ MORE…
Hopenhagen - by Catherine Gauthier
Hier, la Conférence des Nations Unies sur les Changements Climatiques débutait officiellement. Comme vous l’avez probablement lu dans les articles précédents, le Canada s’est mérité le Fossile du jour… surprenant ?
Danish Text Leak Causes Big Stir at COP - by Rhiya Trivedi
What power.
Those are the only two words in my head right now, on day two of negotiations in Copenhagen.
It could be in reference to negotiators as a whole, the president of the conference, the United States, or the youth movement. But instead, today, it’s about developed countries, and their immoral and unwavering dominance over the developing world on the climate problem.
A Night at Klimaforum – the alternative people’s summit
- Jasmett Sindhu
While thousands of delegates are descending upon the Bella Centre in Copenhagen for the UN negotiation summit, a couple of miles away in the heart of downtown, delegates are gathering for a different kind of summit.Klimaforum, aka the Peoples’ Climate Summit is billed as an “open space where people, movements and organizations from all over the World can meet discuss and develop a constructive response to the climate crisis.” READ MORE…

Fossil of the Day! YAY
Canada has been awarded a Fossil of theDay on the first day of negotiations at theUN climate summit in Copenhagen. This “prize”, given to countries who are blocking progress at the United Nations climate summit, is awarded daily by a coalition of400 leading international NGOs.Canada garnered today’s award for its unwavering commitment to stand firm in its inaction throughout these negotiations. At a speech in Montreal on Friday, Environment Minister Jim Prentice said that he “wont be swayed by the Copenhagen hype.”
But if there’s one country on the face of this planet that desperately needs to be swayed, it’s Canada. Since announcing its emissions target in 2007 of reducing GHG emissions by 20% below the 2006 emission level (equivalent to 3 % below the1990 level), the Harper government has consistently refused to adopt any regulatory framework to start reducing emissions, namely form the rapidly growing sector of tar sands. “So not only do they have the worst records of all industrialised countries, they’re now saying they are going to stick to it,” said Steven Guilbeault from Equiterre. “Someone needs to remindthe Canadian government that at negotiations, it is indeed necessary to negotiate.”
