Canadians Not Being Represented
in Copenhagen
– Devon Willis

Cities, Provinces, Youth, Labour … Canadians take the lead on climate as our federal government stays behind.

While the federal government stalls at the climate negotiations in Ottawa, Canadians are making it evident, back home and at the negotiations, that the minority Canadian government is failing to represent Canadians at these negotiations, and that Canadians are embarrassed read more.

How the UNFCCC is Helping to Save Tropical Forests - by Dean Medeiros

Deforestation has devastating impacts on numerous indigenous/local communities that inhabit and depend on the forests for their livelihoods. The rights of forest inhabitants are often overlooked by wealthier and more powerful individuals seeking industrial-scale access to rain forest resources. To protect the forest from further destruction, the rights of indigenous/local communities must be recognized and the value of the standing trees must be greater than the resources extracted/utilized with logging, mining, and agriculture operations.

Developing Nations Walk out of Negotiations - by Jasmeet Sidhu

For the third time during the negotiations, the discussions have been suspended after developing nations walk out of negotiations en masse today.

CYD Actions of the Day (see photos to the right)

Action 1 - by Josée Madéia
Hand in hand, twenty-five youth delegates walked through the Bella Centre, quiet as mice in the hustle and bustle. With our CYD logo on the front of our shirts, and "Canada : Lead, Follow or GO HOME" stickers on the back, we made our way to the main plenary hall and just stood, in a line, front to back to front, until security forced us to disperse.

Action 2 -
This afternoon the CYD brought the message that the Canadian Delegation is not representing Canadians right to their delegation’s office at the Bella Center.

Poem of the Day - by Ali P.

Steven,
from you leader we need action,
a vision of the future free of any oil distraction,
A utopian society built to sustain,
instead we plunder the earth to international disdain,
For us, a country of great wealth,
we ignore our impact on global health
We are a country which could shift focus with ease,
but the conservative party goes about as they please,
with targets not based on science or morals,
you're setting Canada up for many future quarrels
Problems unforeseen have now become clear,
we can't affrod to contine on this path for even one more year

Update: the number of civil society members allowed into the conference is to be slashed, and then likely cut entirely.

Environment Minister Jim Prentice is in town and doesn’t want to chat, but Graham Anderson pursued him doggedly.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has the last laugh at the Bella Centre’s candlelight vigil.  Listen here now
