Beginning on Thursday, December 17, the Canadian Youth Delegation, along with thousands of other NGO representatives, were barred from the UN Climate Summit. Canada’s minority government has refused to hold briefings with the negotiating team in a location accessible to the CYD.
Fortunately, friends of the CYD with access to the daily briefings have been asking questions on our behalf.
Sit-in: An “insider” perspective, from start to finish
Daniel T’seleie
I woke up at about 4:00pm on Tuesday from a long nap. It had been a hectic week. Shortly after waking up I heard about an evening briefing for a sit in at the US information area in the UN climate summit venue. I’m not usually one for "actions," but I loved this idea since we all knew Wednesday would be our last day on the inside before being barred from the conference.
The only part I didn’t like was targeting the US. I’m Canadian, and am simply outraged at our minority government’s pathetic attempts at convincing the world they are taking climate change seriously when, in fact, they are stalling any type of action by any means necessary. This includes obfuscating the science and lying to Canadians.
This afternoon, Canada received the dubious honour of the Colossal Fossil – going to the country that has accumulated the most daily Fossil of the Day awards for obstructionist behaviour in the negotiations. The award recipients are chosen by a coalition of 450 international NGOs, each day.
Until this conference, I was a dreamer. I came believing that the ideal outcome of Copenhagen was also the possible and plausible outcome of Copenhagen. I had faith that a fair, ambitious and legally binding treaty would emerge from the chaos and confusion of these talks.
COP Podcast #12: Spare change for adaptation funding?
In today’s climate news, we focus on financing with the US announcement of significant funding for adaptation and mitigation financing in developing nations. Andrew Cuddy gives us the policy update, while Gill Cerbu and Josée Madéia tell us about the CYD action today.
“Countries should send 30-year-olds to the negotiations” – Mike Eckhart
“If I hear the word grandchildren one more time…” – Bill McKibben (referring to the fact that people are being affected by climate change now).
